One fault, one patch

Patch Relining in Perth

Patch relining in Perth seals a single crack, open joint or root entry point from inside the pipe, without relining the length either side of it. We find the fault on camera first, and only quote a patch when the pipe around it is sound enough for one to hold.

  • Camera first, with the recording handed to you
Patch relining in Perth uses the same resin as a full reline: a technician pouring amber resin into a mixing tub to saturate the liner before it goes into the pipe.

Camera first

We see the fault and the pipe either side before recommending a patch.

Sized to the fault

A patch where the damage is local, a full reline where it is not.

No trench

The patch goes in from an existing access point and cures in place.

When it fits

When a patch is the right repair

A patch suits one situation: a single defect in a pipe that is otherwise in good shape. The footage usually shows one of these.

  • One open joint. Two lengths of pipe have pulled apart slightly and sand or roots are getting in at that one point.
  • One crack. A short split, often where the pipe passes under a path, a footing or a heavy tree root.
  • One root entry. Roots coming in at a single joint, with the joints either side still tight.
  • Damage from other work. A pipe nicked by a fence post, a retaining wall footing or a reticulation trench.
When it does not

When patch relining is the wrong job

A patch fixes the metre it covers and nothing else. On older clay sewer, every joint is the same age and made the same way, so one open joint is often the first of several. Patching them one at a time leaves the joints between the patches exactly as they were, and you pay for the setup each time.

So where the camera finds faults spread along the run, we quote to reline the length in one pass instead. If a section has lost its shape, a liner has nothing to cure against, and that section is dug and replaced. Our page on clay pipe relining covers why older lines tend to fail at more than one joint, and relining vs replacement covers when digging is the better answer.

How it runs

How a patch relining job runs

  1. A CCTV drain inspection finds the fault and measures its distance from the access point. You get the recording.
  2. The pipe is cleaned so the patch bonds to the old wall, not to roots or scale.
  3. A short liner is saturated with resin, carried to the fault on an inflatable packer and pressed against the pipe wall.
  4. The resin cures, the packer is deflated and pulled out, and the patch stays.
  5. The camera runs again so you can see the finished repair.

The full method is on how pipe relining works. If the fault is where a branch line joins the main, see pipe junction repair, and for what moves the price on either job, see pipe relining cost in Perth.

What people ask about patch relining

What is patch relining?
A short, resin-saturated liner placed over one damaged section of pipe and cured hard against the old wall. It uses the same cured-in-place method as a full reline, over a much shorter length. It is also called a point repair or a section repair.
Is patch relining cheaper than relining the whole pipe?
Normally, yes, because the liner is shorter and it uses less resin and less cure time. That only holds for one defect with sound pipe either side. If the camera finds several faults along the run, patching each one can cost more than lining the length in one pass. We will not put a figure on either before the inspection.
Will a patch stop tree roots coming back?
At the patched section, yes: the cured liner has no joint for roots to get through. It does nothing for the open joints either side of it. If the footage shows roots at more than one joint, a patch only moves the problem along the pipe, and we will tell you that.
Does a patch reduce the flow through the pipe?
The liner is thin and cures tight against the old wall, so the pipe loses very little of its bore. The bigger effect on flow is usually the other way: a crack or a root mass that was catching waste is gone.
Is a patch the same as a junction repair?
Close, but not the same job. A patch covers a fault in a straight length of pipe. Where the fault sits at the fitting where a branch joins the main, the branch opening has to be cut back open after curing. That is covered on our pipe junction repair page.

One spot in the line that keeps blocking?

Tell us where the property is and what the drain is doing. We will get the camera to the fault, show you the pipe either side, and quote a patch only if a patch will hold.
