Is Pipe Relining Worth It in Perth?
Is pipe relining worth it in Perth? Often, yes, but not always. It is worth it when the pipe still holds its shape and the ground above it is expensive or awkward to dig. It is not worth it when the pipe has collapsed, sagged badly or needs a new route.

What "worth it" actually depends on
Relining and digging up are not two prices for the same job. Digging up buys a new pipe plus the cost of everything removed to reach it: the trench, the concrete, the paving, the garden, sometimes a section of floor. Relining buys a new pipe wall inside the old one and leaves most of that alone.
So the question is really two questions. Is the pipe still in a condition a liner can bond to? And how much would it cost to put back whatever sits on top of it? When the answer to the first is yes and the second is a lot, relining is usually worth it. When either answer goes the other way, it often is not.
Nobody can answer this properly without seeing inside the pipe, including us. That is why every recommendation we make starts with a camera, not a phone estimate.
When pipe relining is worth it
-
Tree roots at the joints. Roots find an open joint and follow the moisture in. Clearing them buys time; lining over the joint takes the gap away. Read more on tree roots in pipes in Perth.
-
Cracks and open joints along a pipe that holds its shape. This is the job relining is built for. The liner cures against the old wall and forms a continuous new pipe inside it.
-
Pipes under slabs, driveways and established gardens. When the line runs under a concrete driveway, a paved alfresco, a house slab or a garden you have spent years on, the reinstatement is the expensive half of a dig. Relining avoids most of it.
-
Heritage and hard-to-dig sites. Character homes with original floors, limestone walls or narrow side access, and properties where a machine simply cannot get in. Our Fremantle heritage home job is one example.
-
Several faults along one run. Lining the length once can make more sense than opening the ground at each fault.
When relining is not worth it
A liner is only as good as the pipe it goes into. These are the situations where we would tell you to dig instead, or to dig one section and line the rest. When a dig is needed, the same team can do it.
-
A collapsed section. Where the wall has caved in, there is no continuous shape left for a liner to form against. That section has to be excavated and replaced.
-
A badly bellied or sagging pipe. A liner follows the pipe it sits in. If the ground has moved and a section no longer falls toward the sewer, lining it keeps the dip, and the dip keeps catching solids.
-
A pipe that needs a new route. If you are extending, building over the line or the pipe is in the wrong place for what comes next, relining the old route fixes a pipe you are about to move.
-
A short, shallow section in open ground. When the damage is brief and sits under lawn or sand with nothing costly above it, opening it up can be the more sensible spend.
Perth's sandy soil is part of why bellies and joint movement show up here. Sand shifts as ground moisture changes, and older clay and concrete lines move with it. That is not a reason to avoid relining, but it is a reason to look before deciding.
Is relining cheaper than digging up?
It depends on what is above the pipe, and we will not put a figure on it before a camera has been down the line. The gap between the two is widest where the reinstatement is expensive: concrete, paving, a slab, a mature garden. On a bare block with a short run and nothing above it worth protecting, the gap narrows and can reverse.
Our page on pipe relining cost in Perth goes through each variable that moves the price, and how pipe relining works explains what you are paying for, step by step.
How we work out if it's worth it for your pipe
-
Camera through the line
A CCTV camera runs the pipe from an existing access point and records where the damage is, how far it runs and what the pipe is made of.
-
An honest recommendation
Reline, dig, or a mix of both on different sections, based on the footage you can watch yourself.
-
A written scope and price
Priced against the run we measured, so you are comparing real options, not guesses.
