Sewer line replacement

Sewer Line Replacement in Perth

Sewer line replacement in Perth can mean digging the old pipe out and laying new, or relining it so a new pipe forms inside the old one. Relining replaces the line without a trench along its length. A full dig is still the right answer for some pipes, and a CCTV inspection shows which one yours is.

  • The camera decides whether your line needs digging, not the quote

A new pipe inside the old one

A resin liner cures against the old wall and forms a continuous, jointless pipe.

Through an access point

The liner goes in at one point, so the ground along the rest of the run stays closed.

Two ways to replace a line

What sewer line replacement actually involves

Dig and replace means opening a trench along the damaged run, taking the old pipe out, laying new pipe at the right fall, backfilling and compacting, then putting back whatever was on top: the driveway, the paving, the lawn, the garden bed, sometimes part of a floor. The pipe is new. So is a large share of the bill, because most of it pays for getting to the pipe and restoring the ground afterwards.

Relining replaces the line from the inside. After a camera inspection and cleaning, a resin-saturated liner is fed into the old sewer through an access point, such as an inspection opening or a cut in the line, and pressed against the wall. It cures hard and becomes a new structural pipe bonded inside the old one. This is what Pipe Relining Perth does, and the full sequence is on how pipe relining works.

Replaced, and kept

What relining replaces, and what it keeps

If you have been told the sewer line needs replacing, it helps to know which parts of the problem relining deals with, and which it cannot.

  • It replaces the pipe wall. Cracks, open joints, corrosion and the gaps roots use are sealed over by a continuous new wall. See tree roots in pipes for why that matters.

  • It removes the joints. Old clay and concrete sewers are short lengths joined end to end. The relined length has no joints at all.

  • It keeps the route and the fall. A liner follows the pipe it sits in. If the line runs where you need it and still falls toward the sewer, that is exactly what you want. If it does not, relining cannot change it.

The honest limit

When a full dig-and-replace is genuinely needed

Some sewer lines do need to come out of the ground. These are the situations where we will tell you relining is not the answer for that section.

  • A section has fully collapsed and there is no bore left for a liner to form against.
  • The ground has dropped and left a pronounced belly that holds water and collects solids.
  • The line needs a new route, because you are extending or building over it.
  • The damage is short and shallow, under open ground with nothing costly above it.

When a section does need digging, the same team can dig it out and lay the new pipe. We reline where the pipe allows it and dig only where it genuinely needs it.

It is rarely all or nothing. A run with one collapsed section and cracked pipe either side can often have the collapsed length dug and replaced and the rest relined, so the trench stays as short as the failure. Collapsed sewer pipe repair in Perth goes through that case in detail.

Where it pays off

Why relining suits so many Perth sewer lines

Perth's sandy soil shifts as ground moisture changes through the year, and older clay and concrete sewer lines move with it. That works joints open and lets roots in, which is exactly the damage relining is built for. The same lines often run under concrete driveways, paved alfrescos, limestone walls and established gardens. Our Fremantle heritage home job was relined through existing access points instead. See sewer pipe relining for a typical house job, or is pipe relining worth it in Perth for the cost trade-off.

How we scope a sewer line replacement

  1. Camera through the line

A CCTV camera runs the sewer from an existing access point and records where the damage is, how far it runs and what the pipe is made of.

  2. Reline, dig, or both

We tell you which sections can be relined and which, if any, need digging, based on footage you can watch with us.

  3. A written scope

Priced against the run we measured, so you can compare it properly with any replacement quote you already have.

Confirm it first

Why the camera decides, not the quote

A replacement quote given without a camera is a guess at the length and condition of the pipe. A CCTV drain inspection shows where the damage starts and stops, whether the pipe still holds its shape, and what it is made of. You see the same footage we do. If it shows a section that needs digging, we will tell you that rather than quote a liner that would not hold. For what moves the price once the scope is known, see pipe relining cost in Perth.

Questions about replacing a sewer line

Is relining a real replacement or just a patch?
Relining the full run is a replacement of the pipe wall, not a patch. The liner cures into a continuous new pipe inside the old one, with no joints along the relined length. A patch, or point repair, is a different job: a short liner over one defect with sound pipe either side of it. A written scope should say plainly which one you are being quoted for.
Can the whole sewer line be relined, from the house to the connection point?
Sewer relining works on the waste line from the building to the connection point, so a full run can be relined where the pipe holds its shape along its length. Where one section has collapsed or sagged badly, that section needs digging and relaying first, and the rest can then be relined.
How long does a relined sewer line last compared with new pipe?
We will not put a number on a pipe we have not inspected. Lifespan depends on how well the liner is installed and cured, and on the host pipe around it. A correctly cured liner forms a continuous, jointless wall, so it is not prone to the joint separation and root entry that ages old clay and concrete sewers.
Is relining cheaper than replacing the sewer line?
It depends on what sits above the pipe. Replacement pays for new pipe plus everything removed to reach it and put back afterwards. Relining avoids most of that. The gap is widest under concrete, paving, slabs and established gardens, and narrows on a short, shallow run in open ground. Our pipe relining cost page covers what moves the price.
