Pipes under the driveway

Pipe Relining Under a Driveway in Perth

Pipe relining under a driveway in Perth repairs the sewer or stormwater line beneath your pavers or concrete from the inside, so there is no saw cut, no patch that never quite matches, and no trench across the only way your car gets in and out.

  • Pavers, plain concrete and exposed aggregate all stay put
Pipe relining under a driveway in Perth uses a liner like this one, laid flat along a concrete footpath before it goes in, with a technician's hand smoothing it and the draw rope running its length.

Camera before any quote

CCTV shows which line under the driveway is damaged, how far along it, and whether it can be lined.

No reinstatement to match

The liner goes in at an access point, so no pavers are relaid and no concrete is patched.

Sewer and stormwater

Both lines often cross under the same driveway, and both can be relined.

What is under there

Which pipes run under a Perth driveway

A driveway usually sits over more pipe than people expect. The house sewer often crosses it on the way to its connection near the front of the block. Stormwater lines run under it too, carrying downpipes and the driveway's own grated drain to a soakwell. On a battle-axe or corner block, a line can run the full length of the drive.

These lines are shallower than you might think, and they sit under a surface that carries the weight of a car every day. That load, plus Perth sand shifting as it wets and dries, works at old joints until one cracks or opens.

What to look for

Signs a pipe under the driveway has failed

  • Pavers sinking or rocking in a line, or sand washing out from between them.
  • A new crack or a dip in the concrete that follows the route of a pipe.
  • The driveway grated drain backing up or overflowing in heavy rain.
  • The gully at the front of the house overflowing, or a sewage smell out the front.
  • A street tree on the verge, or a big tree in the front yard, close to where the lines run.

Sinking pavers are the one to take seriously. A cracked stormwater or sewer pipe can draw the sand bedding into itself, leaving a void under the surface that keeps growing.

The alternative

Pavers, concrete or exposed aggregate: what digging up costs you

What it takes to put a driveway back depends on what it is made of.

  • Pavers can be lifted and relaid, but the bedding sand and edge restraints get disturbed, and a relaid strip can settle differently from the rest. If some break, the same paver may no longer be made, and new ones will not have the same years of weathering.

  • Plain poured concrete is saw cut, broken out and re-poured. The new section sits beside the old as a visible strip, and it needs time to cure before it takes a car's weight again.

  • Exposed aggregate and coloured concrete are the hardest to patch. Matching the stone mix and the colour of a slab that has weathered for years is rarely exact, which is why some owners end up replacing a whole section just so it looks even.

On a finished driveway, the reinstatement is often worth more than the pipe repair itself. Relining leaves the surface alone, so there is nothing to match.

Confirm it first

CCTV first: which line, and how far along

A CCTV drain inspection runs a camera from an access point and records how far along the pipe the damage sits. That tells us whether the fault is actually under the driveway or beyond it, whether it is on the sewer or the stormwater line, and whether the pipe still holds its shape well enough to take a liner. You see the footage before any price is given.

The fix

How relining works with the car still in the drive

After the line is cleaned and any roots cut back, a resin-saturated liner is fed in from an inspection opening, a gully or a cut-in point, drawn along under the driveway and cured against the old pipe wall. The driveway is not opened along the pipe. The work area is the access point and the space our gear needs beside it, so the main thing to plan is where our vehicle parks and when yours needs to be out.

A cured liner also closes the joints that roots from a verge or front-yard tree were getting through, so the tree does not need to come out. See tree roots in pipes in Perth for more on that. For stormwater lines and driveway drains, see stormwater pipe relining; for the house sewer, sewer pipe relining.

Where it stops

When digging up the driveway is the better call

Relining is not always the answer outside. A short, shallow fault under pavers that can be lifted and relaid cleanly can be simpler to dig. A section that has collapsed, or dropped and holds water, needs replacing whatever the surface. We will tell you when that is the case, the same team can do the dig, and is pipe relining worth it walks through the same trade-off in more detail. For what moves the price of a reline, see pipe relining cost in Perth.

If the damaged pipe runs under the house rather than the driveway, the problem is floors and wet areas instead of paving: see pipe relining under slab in Perth.

What people ask us about pipes under driveways

Is it cheaper to lift the pavers than to reline under them?
Sometimes. Pavers can be lifted and relaid, so a short, shallow fault under a paved driveway can be simpler to dig up and replace. Relining pulls ahead when the run is long, the pipe is deep, the pavers are no longer made, or the line also passes under concrete, a garden or a wall. We will tell you which way your job falls once the camera has measured it.
Can I still use the driveway on the day?
Usually, with some planning. The work happens at the access point, not along the driveway, but the jetter, the liner and the curing gear need to park within reach of it, and that is often on the driveway itself. We work out with you when booking where our vehicle goes and when yours needs to be out.
Can you reline the stormwater under my driveway as well as the sewer?
Yes. They are separate lines that often cross under the same driveway, and both can be relined. Stormwater lines here commonly carry the downpipes and the driveway grated drain to a soakwell. The camera run tells us which line is damaged, and sometimes it is both.
What if the fault is near the front boundary?
The camera footage shows how far along the line the damage sits, so we can tell you where it is relative to your boundary before anything is quoted. If the fault turns out not to be on your pipe, we will say so rather than quote you for it.

Pavers sinking or a drain backing up out the front?

Tell us where the property is and what the driveway is doing. We will get a camera into the line, show you where the fault is, and quote to fix it from an access point instead of through the driveway.
